Recording Content:
The first half of the recording contains an informal chat with Rabbi Shlomo Breuer at his office in the Zhytomyr synagogue. Breuer talks about the construction of the synagogue. They then discuss communal life in Zhytomyr today, which has a Jewish community of approximately 4,000. Breuer then talks about his own Hasidic lineage and tells Hasidic anecdotes. The conversation then turns to a discussion of Russian Hasidim. The conversation concludes with a discussion of Yiddish-speaking Jews in the region and current events in the Jewish community.
The second part of the tape begins with an informal greeting of the interviewees at the synagogue. (See Accession # 09-010.56-F MDV 761 for formal interview with Isaak Iosipovich Vaisman) David Zelikovich Furman shows a photograph of himself with war medals. Then the formal interview of Furman starts (Part 1 of 2. See MDV 349). He talks about his experience in the Red Army. He was drafted in 1939. In 1941, Furman fought at the front. When he fought in Stalingrad in 1942, he lost one of his legs. The conversation then moves to childhood memories and how Jewish holidays were celebrated before the war. He talks about an active religious and cultural life in Berdychiv. Artists came from Odessa and Kyiv and his family saw Yiddish theater shows on a regular basis. The tape concludes with food customs and more war memories about Stalingrad.
